The End is Near
Do you know we are living in the Last days?
This an era of time on earth close to the end of all things (the end of the world), an era of time close to the second coming of Christ. When the trumpet shall sound, only those who are ready for the the second coming of Christ will hear it and be raptured (1 Corinthians 15:51-52). In case you may not be familiar with the word rapture in the biblical sense, it is an end time event, where the followers and believers of Christ who are alive, and those who are dead in Christ will rise in the cloud and meet the Lord in the air.
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise. After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.” - 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17We are evidently living in the last days , an era which is prophesied severally in the bible. The bible talks about the events that will be taking place in the last days such as pandemic and natural disasters.
“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.” - Matthew 24:6-8The bible calls it the beginning of sorrows. This is in fact an undeniable truth. Over 1 million people have died due to the horrific pandemic COVID-19 as of September 2020, huge earthquakes in Crotia, Turkey, Puerto Rico, Japan, and many other countries, massive wildfire in Australia and California, the Syrian war, famine in many economically challenged countries like Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Yemen and so on. You and your loved ones may be among the people God has chosen to preserve, thanks be to God. If you have lost any of your loved ones, I am truely sorry for your loss, but all glory to God for preserving you. Many people around the globe has wept and are still weeping over the loss their loved ones, suffering from hunger, sicknesses, loss of jobs, living under fear and uncertainty. It is indeed, the beginning of sorrows.
Sinful generation of the last days
“But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit (excessive pride), lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power...” - 2 Timothy 3:1-5There are lots to expound on these verses. First, it says, in the last days there will come a time of difficulty. In this context, the difficulty is in the aspect of sociality and spirituality, and afterwhich it begins to list the features of such difficulties. Generally, the verses list out features of wordliness, wickedness, and selfishness/pride of life. Is this not evident in our society today?
“...anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.” - James 4:4b“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” (1 John 2: 15) By Matthew Poole's commentary, love of the world refers to inordinate affection to the world, addictedness or devotedness to the things or men of the world. Careers and education are inclusive, although they are not sinful and are necessary for our daily living, should one place them above spriritual matters which has eternal value? These days people care less about spiritual matters, and care more about worldly success and other secular things, which will not last forever. The things of this world will surely pass away but the word of God will not pass away (1 John 2:17, Matthew 24:35). Let us not be idolatrous over things that does not have eternal value but instead seek His kingdom and His righteousness, God will provide everything other things we need to survive and succeed in this life. (Mathhew 6:33).
From 2 Timothy 3:1-5; arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, slanderous, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, falls under this category. Wickedness generally are the actions and thoughts the word of God considers as sin. 2 Timothy 3:1-5, in other words, tells us how sinful the generations of last days will be, and it will be the most sinful generation of all time. Has not our governments started to legalize some sins God condemns? That's a huge topic on it's own. And this is one of the signs that we are living in the last days. I pray God will deliver us.
3. Pride of life and selfishness
This is evident in our world today. People are after praise, acknowlegement, vain applause, fame, power over others, all-round attention, seeking self-glory, desire to appear worldly appealing, and desire for prestige. Take for instance, the social media such as Tik-Tok, snapchat, instagram, and some others. They are not sinful if used in the right ways. The question is, why do you share what you share on those social platforms and what spiritual impact does it have in your life and in others? This is not limited to social media, but it extends to the way we dress, talk and act towards others, the choice of job, and every other areas of our lives. What is you motive behind what do you, and what is it's spiritual impact and outcome? - “let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.” (Galatians 5:26)
Those that have ear, let them hear
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”The New Living Translation (NLT) says “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches.” (Revelation 2:29) God has kindly given His church (christians His) words and His Spirit so that we can be guided and be directed on the right things to do, even in the last days. Whoever hardens his/her heart and Ignores God's words now incurs dangers for himself/herself physically and spiritually. As long as you are physically alive now, it is not too late to amend your ways to the will of God. Therefore, take heed, understand, and obey God's word. These are things we must do on last days according to the word of God;
1. Repent and be saved
“From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”” (Matthew 4:17). The kingdom of God is near, time will come when we will all stand before God and be judged according to our deeds (2 Corinthians 5:10). However, without receiving the free gift of salvation through confession of sins, genuine repentance and faith in Jesus Christ by accepting Him as your Lord and personal saviour, who will be able to withstand God's wrath on the day judgement? And the bible says no man knows the day or hour, neither the angels of heaven, when Jesus Christ will come to take away the saint to heaven, consequently, everyone needs to be prepared anytime and anyday for His glorious coming (Matthew 24:36). Therrefore, I urge you brethren to repent of your sins and surrender your life to Christ Jesus.
2. Be watchful and be prayerful
“The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.” (1 Peter 4:7). We are expected to pray for our family members, friends, the churches, and the whole world so that they may repent of their sins, be saved and be steadfast until His coming. Also, we need to pray for ourselves to endure and remain holy till the end, “so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” (1 Corinthians 9:27).
3. Spread the word of God
Whether your title is evangelist or not, this a call for every child of God as Jesus command “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” (Mark 16:15). We the children of God need to proclaim the gospel of salvation to the world before it is too late for them. No one knows the date his/her death, neither does anyone know the hour and the day of Christ's second coming. This is why we cannot waste so much time to spread the gospel when the opportunity is there. God does not want anyone to perish in hell but that everybody should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9), this is the will of God for every humanity. Do not be worried or be afraid of the rejection or the persecution that may follow, God will grant you wisdom as you preach, He will see your faithful and diligent work in open and in secret and He will surely reward you.
The immediate need for genuine repentance for all humanity cannot be overemphasized as we live in the era of last days. This is the time for every child of God, as well as unbelievers, and backsliders to take the word of God seriously than ever before (if it was not taken seriously). Therefore, let us be serious-minded towards spiritual matters, most especially our personal relationship with God. If you have not given your life to Christ, now is the time for you to do so, if you have backslidden, now is the time to come back to God. Christian life is not a bed of roses, we will pass through many trials and persecution. As much as God wants us to make it to heaven, Satan does not want us to make it to heaven. Satan knows that he does not have enough time since we are in the last days, he will bring many temptations, doubt, challenges, fear, and persecutions upon all christians. However, our hope should be in Christ, if anyone is a true child of God there is nothing to fear or to be afraid of, because God is with us (Isaiah 40:31), and by His grace which has been abundantly provided for us (2 Corinthians 12:9) we will fight a good fight of faith and conquer the world (1 Timothy 6:12) through being watchful, praying, and spreading the word of God.
